About destination UNKnown
What We Stand and Fight for: 1. destination UNKnown, foremost, is and will always be about QUALITY DANCE AND ELECTRONIC MUSIC. What do we mean by that? Soul, jazz, funk, disco, house, techno, new wave and post punk, electro, acid house, drum&bass, reggae, broken beat, breakbeats, bossa nova, hiphop, dub, krautrock, ambient, afrobeat, post-rock and whatever's next. From Blue Note and Verve to Trojan and Studio One, from Stax to Trax, from Motown to Sonar Kollektiv, from Def Jam to Transmat and from Salsoul to International Deejay Gigolos. From Herbie Hancock to Jazzanova, from Serge Gainsbourg to Fela Kuti, from King Tubby to Public Enemy, from New Order to DFA and from James Brown to Carl Craig. We don't care if it's coming out of your ass, nose or ears. If it's good, if it's got the swing, the funk, the groove, the poetry, the feel, we will play it. You want instrumental electronics or passionate lyricism, smooth satin love grooves or trashy kitsch, enchanting demo quality or immaculately produced walls of sound, unbearably fast or dead slow or just sample-based and cut-up sound esthetics? We'll give you a ride you will enjoy. 2. What destination UNKnown is NOT about: loud commercial bullshit; hyped-up big company music with more budget than quality; playing records just because they're new and hot and trendy; confining ourselves to just one genre or style; forgetting about good tunes because they are a mere two months old and there's something better and newer; plastic passion and mass production; jumping on someone else's train. 3. destination UNKnown is about co-operation, following your instinct and an open mind. Each of us love and advocate their own darlings and dig up their own treasures. But at the end of the day we're trying to integrate our passions and come up with new affinities, links and cross-references that create a platform for surprise and innovation instead of the re-chewing of old formulas and limiting ourselves to what may be the flavor of the week. destination UNKnown is a package that varies from day to day, week to week; month to month. What You Hear Is What You Get! 4. destination UNKnown is an invitation to dance. It is about shaking your butt, throwing your hands in the air, togetherness and a general party spirit, ecstasy and pain, tears and joys. It is for lovers and losers. It's the mistakes and the masterplans alike. It's about technicality and beauty, the search for perfection together with the trials and the errors that go with it. It's about passion for music and respect for those who are trying to make a difference. 5. destination UNKnown is about change. As we and our personalities evolve, our musical interests change with us. And because of all the rapid shifts in music history who knows were today's music is heading tomorrow? destination UNKnown wants to represent the past you remember; the present you live and the future you're expecting at the same time. 6. destination UNKnown is about giving a forum to old and new, well-known and obscure artists who were and are trying new and exciting things, going where no-one has gone before. It's about searching the dusty archives and digging up old treasures that deserve more attention than they've been granted in the past. It's about putting faith and keeping the flame burning when others have allowed it to die out. It's about feeling the pulse of the moment without neglecting the history that got us there. 7. destination UNKnown is not about downloading, copying, mp3-ing, throwing away after consumption and thus ripping-off courageous and daring artists who every day are trying to push the boundaries and then not getting paid for it. Big companies can afford that because they are making obscene amounts of money anyway. Underground artists spreading new ideas, values, techniques, concepts and sounds can not. They need our full support because without innovation and a vision that is directed towards the future and the unknown, we might just as well stop listening and buy that new Britney, Beyoncé or Christina record. Mind you: we do not reject commercial or hit music just because it is commercial and do not think that industry music is always shite just because it is issued from corporate HQ's. We just want to make sure they are not the only ones you are listening to. destination UNKnown is made by Vincent Romain, PJ Thienpont, Robin Vanhees, Arne Daneels and Eria Lubacov.
